thanks read your post and some of the comments were helpful. Disassembly guide (there are screws hidden under the rubber feet, the rest is pinch and pull) At this point I had been copping data to it for a day (it seems to be pretty slow, even with a USB 3.0 external drive plugged into it) and decided there was no working with this file system and formatted the drive. I couldn't find where the data was and many of the folders were locked so I could not access them due to permissions. The one labeled (something like) "4TB Sector" had no obvious location of the user data. It had ~24 partitions on it, of which 5 would mount. That was the final straw so I Shucked the drive and plugged it into a linux box.

At which point it would say "device offline", stopping transfers and causing the mapped drives (including public) to disconnect. This seemed to work for a few minutes as I could still connect to the drive an move files on LAN but it would time out after a few minutes of not talking to its WD server. So I set firewall rules to block the WD M圜loud from external connections. I get that its a "personal cloud device" but at most I am comfortable with a SAMBA share on the LAN. I was not happy about the need for it being connected to the internet to function. Meaning that, if you write files to this folder (which will be visible to all on your LAN with no user control) there is no way to move them into other folders under your user account, without (slowly) copping them to and from a computer. There is a Public folder which is shown to the local area network, but this folder is not visible from within the mycloud webpage or the network drive. I never tested the cloud function so am not sure if this mapped drive holds true when over WAN.

With WD Discovery app installed, the drive automatically appears as a drive in "This PC" on windows (on LAN), once you have logged in to your account via the app. I found that without their desktop app (WD Discovery) installed on your machine (Mac and Windows ONLY, no linux support), you are SOL for network map drives. So I plugged it into my router, setup a WD cloud account and installed the WD Discovery app on my laptop. The drive only has an ethernet port and a type A USB 3.0 port for connecting other devices/drives to it, no direct connection to PC. I was offended at the lack of settings and user control, as well as the drive basically not being functional without internet connection. They had some hard coded back doors discovered and pushed firmware updates. Īs this and other posts reference features which are now gone. It appears these used to be somewhat cooler than they are now (from forum posts in 2016-7). I thought "even if this is BS, I have a good 4TB drive to pull". Spotted a 4TB M圜loud on sale for $65 and grabbed it without looking into it. I was was at local office supply store looking for a large drive for backup consolidation. A good source of WD Red drives if you find them on sale. TL:DR WD M圜loud is stripped of features and requires internet to work even on LAN.
